Join MIT Libraries and students from MIT DUSP and MIT Architecture for the “BIPOC Design Wikipedia Edit-a-thon” August 17 – 21. During this weeklong series of events, participants will create new pages and edit existing ones for Black, Indigenous, People of Color designers in the built environment. No experience editing wikipedia is necessary to attend and participate! . This event is part of the “BIPOC Design Archive Project,” a digital archive of Black, Indigenous, People of Color designers in the built environment. This summer, students across the MIT School of Architecture and Planning and MIT Libraries have joined forces to create this resource, initially focused on the U.S., that highlights those who have made—and continue to make—contributions to design in education and in practice. . @buildforblacklives has projects that are seeking pro-bono design services for Black-owned businesses. The organization has experience running hackathons that bring together Computer Science majors with other disciplines. See information below if you are interested in viewing their open projects.
From their website: “Build for Black Lives is a platform built to connect anti-racist individuals with activists, organizers, and Black-owned businesses to provide pro bono work creating websites, apps, graphics, social media content, data visualizations, and other projects. Our aim is to provide pro-bono services as a means of working towards justice and reparations for a community that has been systematically oppressed, exploited, and underserved by the tech and design industries.
Build for Black Lives was created by HackBeanpot, a 501(c)(3), Boston-based hackathon that aims to build a diverse, inclusive, learning-focused tech community. Given that racism has long been an issue in the tech space, we started this platform to bring the anti-racist tech community together to take action to support Black lives and fight white supremacy.”
Where does UX sit and what does it “look like” within an organization? In this session, our panelists, many of whom work with teams distributed around the planet, will share how their teams are structured and how UX works with other team members. They’ll touch upon the methods that they use, and how the team set up reflects that.
